The medieval motif of the hare originates from a ceramic bowl made in Fatimid Egypt in the 11th century. Bowls and ceramics with either inscriptions or animal motifs in their center were very common in medieval Islamic pottery. The hare was a common motif because it symbolized luck and prosperity.
