Join Dr Gina as she talks to Yadira Thabatah about her journey to Islam. This a touching story of struggle and joy, having to live as a blind person, getting married, having children and finding a new religion.

About Yadira:

  • Converted in 2004, almost 18 years ago
  • Currently aged 38
  • Cultural background is Puerto Rican
  • Grew up in New Jersey
  • Currently lives in Texas
  • Is the COO and cofounder of Islam By Touch

Yadira is passionate about advocating for the rights of the blind community and the disabled community as a whole. She is particularly focused on trying to ensure that the blind community receives equity and has inclusion within the Muslim community.

Yadira cofounded Islam By Touch which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making Islam accessible to the blind community. A few of the ways they do this is by providing the English translation of the Quran in braille. They have developed an app that has the English translation of the Quran and other books so that blind users may access the materials through screen readers. They provide support for the blind community by providing emotional support when needed, resources, and sponsoring community events. They also offer workshops to the Muslim community as a whole in order to educate on how to appropriately interact with and include the blind community. The organization is also involved in giving dawah to the blind community by offering dawah materials in accessible formats.

Yadira is a creative person and loves to undertake different artistic projects. She received extensive vocal training and has been singing since the age of four. She enjoys swimming, reading, and writing and absolutely loves animals and although she hasn't been horseback riding in a while, thoroughly enjoys it.

Yadira is also a homeschooling mother of four children.
